Sudini Jaipal Reddy was one of the tallest leaders of Congress Party. The five-time member of Lok Sabha, four-time MLA and two-time Rajya Sabha member, he was amongst the most senior and experienced leader of Congress party. During his long career, he served as Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Union Minister for Urban Development, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas. He was the Union Minister for the Ministry of Earth Sciences and the Ministry of Science and Technology from 29 October 2012 to 18 May 2014.
Reddy was born on 16 January 1942 in Madgul which was then in Hyderabad State. Today it is part of present-day Telangana State. He did his M.A. from the Osmania University, Hyderabad. Reddy joined the Indian National Congress in 1970. He entered active public life as MLA from Kalwakurthy in Andhra Pradesh. He represented this assembly seat between 1969 and 1984, almost for four terms. A man of principle he was staunch opposer of political emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi cabinet. He joined Janata Party in 1977 but rejoined Congress Party again in 1999 and was elected to the 14th in 2004 from Miryalaguda constituency and the 15th in 2009 from Chavella. He was made Union Minister in Federal front government earlier and Congress-led UPA I and UPA II regimes. Known for his oratory skills, Reddy served as a spokesperson for his party and alliance. He was conferred Outstanding Parliamentarian Award in 1998 for his overall contribution in Parliament. Reddy also authored some books including “Ten Ideologies: The Great Asymmetry between Agrarianism and Industrialism”.
Illness and Death
Suffering from Pneumonia, S. Jaipal Reddy passed away on 28th July 2019 at his Jubilee Hills residence. His death was mourned by many senior Congress party leaders and others. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
